Club d’Elf, an ever-changing musical collective led by head elf Mike Rivard, has released an inspired video single, “Dervish Dance,” to preview its forthcoming album, You Never Know (available April 1). The video features sand artist Kseniya Simonova, whose spellbinding creation captures the essence of the tune and your imagination.

Adapted from a traditional Sufi song and arranged by Mike Rivard, “Dervish Dance” blends folkloric, psychedelic, jazz, and electronic elements in characteristic Club d’Elf style. The trancelike effect reflects Rivard’s fascination with gnawa, a North African musical tradition known for its ability to induce alterations in consciousness though mesmeric repetition. Rivard’s fascination was intensified a few years ago when he suffered a life-threatening medical emergency. “As I slipped further and further into the darkness, one of the scariest parts was how things I loved lost all meaning, the pleasure just drained away,” he says. Dedicating himself to learning the traditions of gnawa, Rivard emerged from the depression and began the journey to You Never Know.

The single, available on all steaming outlets, features Brahim Fribgane (oud, frame drum), David Fiuczynski (fretless guitar), John Medeski (keyboards), Mister Rourke (turntables), Rivard (bass, tamboura), and Dean Johnston (drums).

Enjoy.
