Chris Greene Quartet Crosses Boundaries in Los Ranchos and Corrales

Chris Greene Quartet: Steve Corley, Greene, Marc Piane, Damian Espinosa

Chicago saxophonist Chris Greene has made a career of following his musical instincts wherever they lead, crossing the boundary lines of musical genres with his imagination as his passport. For nearly 15 years, with only a single change in personnel, he’s been aided and abetted by his quartet colleagues—Albuquerque native Damian Espinosa (piano, keyboards), Marc Piane (bass), and Steve Corley (drums). That continuity of personnel allows the quartet to function with what seems like a single brain, and they’ll be exercising that brain this week at two concerts in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and Corrales.

A Jazz Smorgasbord: New Releases from Trovesi and Coscia, Séguin, and McDermott

Jazz comes in many flavors and nationalities, as these three new releases perfectly demonstrate. On La Misteriosa musica della Regina Loana, the duo of Italians Gianluigi Trovesi and Gianni Coscia pay homage to author Umberto Eco with a delightful out-of-the-box offering. Canadian Jacques Kuba Séguin serves up sophisticated compositions with his sextet on Migrations. Tom McDermott, an adopted son of New Orleans, shares his love of Scott Joplin on his mostly solo and, as usual, idiosyncratic release Tom McDermott Meets Scott Joplin.

Trentacosta and Lawrence Team Up on a New Old-School Release: ‘Desert Bop’

Clockwise from top left: Doug Lawrence, Dan Trudell, John Webber, John Trentacosta

Desert Bop offers yet more evidence that the Santa Fe–Albuquerque corridor houses some of the finest musicians anywhere. Drummer John Trentacosta (Santa Fe), whose roots go back to New York City, and saxophonist Doug Lawrence (Albuquerque), longtime lead tenor in the Count Basie Orchestra, serve up some tasty bop in classic style on this new release. (See below for details on the CD release party.)

Lagniappe: Lawrence will also be appearing on July 11 at the Outpost with his new organ quartet as the opening act of the 2019 New Mexico Jazz Festival. He’ll have the inimitable Dan Trudell on organ, John Webber on guitar, and Yuriana Sobrino Garcia on drums. Go here for more info.

Choose Silly or Serious (Both Are Ear Worthy)

Albuquerque singer/songwriters continue to release original work that deserves wider attention. Here are two completely different takes on reality: the sublimely ridiculous Get It Up from Sage and Jared’s Happy Gland Band, and the earnestly searching Stubborn Heart from Kevin Herig.

Get Healed with Isaac Aragon’s New Single

Isaac Aragon

Singer/songwriter Isaac Aragon has two pieces of good news for music listeners: First, he is releasing his new single, “Love Bless America,” on February 19 via the familiar online outlets. Second, he has recently made the decision to flip his work schedule, going from full- to part-time at his physical therapy gig (he’s got a doctorate in that discipline) and from part- to full-time in his music career. That means you’ll be seeing the Peñasco native/Los Lunas resident playing out a much more often than in the past, and you’ll be hearing a lot of new music from him this year. If the rest is anything like “Love Bless America”—oh, baby.
